A group of  MAMP members met with Congressman Collin Peterson to communicate our concerns about the HACCP validation guideline draft. Peterson understood how the way the draft is written how it could economically affect small and very small plants in our state. He also understood the possibilities of what this could do for the employment or should we maybe say unemployment if this draft goes through as written and plants are forced closed due to exuberant cost for testing. Peterson explained to us that he has a committee formed and they went as far as to hire a retired USDA Veterinarian Inspector to aid in the language being used in the draft.

Peterson and his staff arranged for a conference call with FSIS which included almost the whole group that attended the meeting with him along with Jay Wenther from AAMP as a listen in. Having Jay able to listen was very important to our efforts as well as Nikki Neeser since they have both been in communications with FSIS in the past on this subject.

Most of the conference call pertained to safe havens such as Appendix A (for lethality) and Appendix B ( for Stability) During a post conference call we discussed what we heard and in which direction we should go in. From these conference calls a list was compiled for FSIS to respond to.

Though it may seem based off communications we are receiving that FSIS maybe be lightening up a little we still can't stop sending in comments. These communications mean absolutely nothing until it is written in the final rule. Make sure you also send your comments into your State legislature! If they hear enough from all of us maybe they will write comments to FSIS much like Sen. Grassley.
