Minnesota Meat Tax Bill:
It was brought up at our Directors meeting on 1-7-04 that this is the year that the Meat Tax is do to come back. We must now react. It would be a wise thing to contact your representatives and let them know where you stand on this matter! This is thought to be a tougher nut to crack this time around if it gets in. Last time Bread was included on the bill and that was thrown off for good but the meat tax was not. It was taken off only temporarily. So lets do all of our part to make sure that it does NOT get back on there again. Last year it was tried to make sure that it didn't get back on there, but failed to because of lack of support. This is what was heard from as of this morning " I called Pete Nelson this morning, he said that the bill was essentially on hold, but it still looked good. He is working with a House Research Committee and the Minnesota Department of Revenue to get the wording of prepared foods changed. The House will be back in session on Feb 2nd, 2004. Pete said at this time we do not have to do anything. We may have to send a few representatives from our organization down in February to testify before a committee about this issue, but he said he would let Ed Lorentz know when and if he needed anything from our organization.
